Extreme heat advice

With temperatures likely to exceed 35 celsius in the next few days, the following advice issued by Wiltshire Council maybe useful. Please pass on to others and keep an eye out for you neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable or elderly.

Hot weather advice

The Met Office has issued a Red extreme heat alert for Wiltshire on Wednesday and Thursday this week, with temperatures potentially reaching 39C.

  • regularly check the Met Office website for the latest updates
  • look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated, particularly older and more vulnerable people
  • stay cool indoors and close curtains on rooms directly in the sunlight
  • drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
  • never leave anyone or any pets in a closed, parked vehicle, particularly older people, infants, young children or any animals
  • try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest
  • walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat, if you have to go out in the heat
  • avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
  • avoid walking dogs in the heat of the day – walk them either very early in the morning or late at night, or don’t walk them at all for a few days
  • if you need to travel by road or rail please prepare for the journey by bringing plenty of water – there could be disruption to travel networks
  • if you decide to cool off in open water please take care and follow local safety advice
  • if you need any non-emergency health advice, please call NHS 111 or speak to your local pharmacy

oil tank

Attempted heating oil theft

There has been a recent attempted theft of heating oil from a tank of a property in Firs Road. It was thawrted by the alarm fitted to the tank.

With high oil prices, this type of theft is becoming more common, especially in rural areas such as Firsdown.

A few simple tips can keep your tank more secure:

  • Fit a lock to the fill port of the tank.
  • Fit security lighting near the tank. There are are a range of solar and battery powered lights that are movement triggered if there is no mains electricity supply nearby.
  • Consider fitting an alarm to the tank.

These simple measures may well deter an opportune theft, but the Parish Council realises that they may well not stop a determined attempt by theives.

He was well known in Firsdown and spearheaded the campaign for the transfer of ownership of the land that forms the play area from Wiltshire Council to the parish, in order that it could be better maintained and updated.

He was well known to other Parish Councils and Wiltshire Council members.

Brian had been suffering from ill health in recent years and passed away in his sleep on the 28th May. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

cattle dog waste

The danger to cattle from dog waste

Most dog owners are responsible and clean up after their pets, however dog owners may not be aware that the waste can spread neospora which can cause abortions in cattle.

“The parasite in dog faeces that causes cows to abort is Neospora caninum. Dogs are the definitive hosts for this protozoan parasite. They shed microscopic eggs (oocysts) in their faeces, which can contaminate pasture grass or silage. When cows ingest this contaminated feed, they contract a disease called neosporosis, frequently resulting in miscarriages or stillborn calves.

Because an infected cow carries the parasite for life, it can significantly impact both breeding and milk production. For this reason, farmers, veterinarians, and wildlife trusts strongly urge dog owners and walkers to pick up and properly dispose of their dog’s waste whenever they are near grazing land or public rights of way.”

Please always pick up after your dog.
